Phase 3: Trigger & Egg Retrieval
Phase 3: Trigger & Retrieval
To mature the eggs and trigger ovulation, once most of the follicles reach a certain size, we will let you know when to take important time-sensitive 'trigger' medications. These are injection medications called Ovidrel and Decapeptyl. The egg retrieval will then take place 2 days later.
Egg retrieval procedure
The egg retrieval procedure will be performed at our CCRM procedures area at Hannam Fertility Centre. You will need to take the entire day off work and arrange for someone to pick you up after the procedure. The clinic aims to keep you relaxed and comfortable by providing conscious sedation medication through an intravenous (IV) line.
During the procedure, an ultrasound-guided, thin needle is inserted through the vaginal wall into each ovarian follicle that has grown over the last 10 days. The fluid within the follicles is collected in test tubes and the embryology team will then assess the fluid for eggs.
On the day of your egg retrieval, you will find out how many eggs were retrieved but it is not until the next day will you be advised of the number of eggs that were frozen.
